Conversations about dropout and attendance can often be difficult with client’s who have PTSD and may feel compelled by avoidance to stay away from therapy. Now there is more CPT research to help your client understand the importance of completing therapy.
Holmes et al. (2019) examined patterns of dose response for clients who do and do not complete Cognitive Processing Therapy. They found that, the more CPT sessions a client attended the greater their rate of improvement.
In reporting their results, they stated “Generally, results indicate that 42% of clients did not complete treatment, that clients who improved at a greater rate attended more sessions, and it appears that clients who completed all 12 sessions had the best outcomes.”
In another article on this blog we discuss being aware of some of the barriers to PTSD treatment. Some of these barriers are simple and managing or anticipating these can help your client to complete CPT.
